Collection: The Wunderwall Enlarged - Oxiea Villamonte

Oxiea Villamonte (1995, Chicago, USA) lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Graduated from The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, Belgium.

My artistic practice is an intimate archaeology of belonging, conducted through the mediums of photography, publication, and archival intervention. At its core lies a deeply personal excavation: the archives of my family and my matriarchal lineage serve as both source material and sacred site.
The self-portrait functions as a crucial methodological tool, a means to implicate myself within these narratives. A recent commission for The Luther Museum in Amsterdam resulted in a series of nine self-portraits. Here, I channel lived experience to portray contemporary women’s issues, using my own body as a vessel to bridge the personal and the political.
Ultimately, my work seeks to transform private inheritance into public dialogue, questioning how we carry our pasts and construct ourselves within the delicate web of kinship.
