Collection: The Wunderwall Enlarged - Daniëlle Hoogendoorn

Inspired by Les Fleurs du Mal (1857) by Charles Baudelaire, Danielle Hoogendoorn (1990, NL) explores the flower as a carrier of beauty, transience, and paradox. In her project In Those Flowers, Infinity’s Infinity, she connects this motif to the Dutch tradition of floral imagery, rooted in seventeenth-century Vanitas painting, where flowers symbolized temporality and mortality.

At the same time, Hoogendoorn reflects on contemporary Dutch floriculture: a globally leading industry that brings both economic prosperity and ecological challenges. By translating flowers into enduring art objects—ceramic vases with flowers and paintings—she shifts the focus from ephemerality to sustainability.

The works in this exhibition are inspired by the flowers the artist plants each summer in her own garden. Through a subdued presentation of vases and floral paintings, Hoogendoorn emphasizes the flower as a timeless motif, where aesthetics, personal experience, and a growing ecological awareness converge.
